Garmin users are familiar with the Garmin MapInstall that download firmware upgrades for free on selected Garmin devices.

This software allows the users to transfer maps that are installed on the computer system directly to any compatible Garmin GPS unit.

When you install Base Camp on either the Mac computer or Windows, Map Install software is automatically installed.

BaseCamp allows you to plan your outdoor activities, share your adventures with your friends and organize your data. Many times, the users ask queries about the installation procedure of maps using MapInstall on your Garmin device.

In here, we have mentioned the step wise map installation instructions for the Windows and the Mac users.

For Windows:

If you’re a Windows user and want to install Maps on a memory card or your Garmin device, follow:

  • At first, connect your Garmin unit to your Computer system.
  • Next, you have to run MapInstall software,
  • In here, either select the SD card or the device.
    • You will get a green signal only when your device will have enough space to accommodate all compatible map products. Thus, MapInstall will give you either Continue or Customize option when all the installed map products on your computer will completely fit on your selected device.
    • If you select Continue option, all the maps will get transferred to the device.
    • In case, you choose to Customize only individual maps that you will select, will be sent to the device. Moreover, for each map, you can select smaller segments. For this, you only have to click on the Advanced/Partial Install.
  • When you try to load the map to an older Garmin unit or via a memory card reader on an SD card, MapInstall offers you only one option ‘Continue’.
  • Click on this Continue option, followed by the Install option.
  • At last, click on ‘Install’ and wait for the procedure to complete successfully.

Disconnect your device when Map Install will finish loading the maps. After this, you can freely use the maps.

How to Install DVD Maps using Garmin MapInstall on your Garmin D

For Mac OS X:

Before you begin the map installation procedure, make sure that your Mac is not set to go to sleep mode when the display goes off, otherwise, the installation will abort immediately.

To prevent your Mac from going into the sleeping mode, follow:

  • At first, in the menu bar, click on the ‘Apple’ option.
  • Now, select System Preferences, followed by the Energy Saver option.
  • Check the ‘Prevent automatic sleep when the display is off’ box.
  • In case, there is no checkbox available, just toggle the sleep slider towards Never option.

Now, you can proceed to install maps on your memory card or the Garmin GPS device.

  • At first, you have to connect your Garmin unit to your computer system.
  • Now, run the MapInstall application.
  • Next, you have to choose SD card or your Device.
    • You will get a green signal only when your device will have enough space to accommodate all compatible map products. Thus, MapInstall will give you either Continue or Customize option when all the installed map product on your computer will completely fit on your selected device.

Some useful tips:

  • When you select a particular device, your storage meter shows the space that your selected maps will consume in relation to the space available on your SD card or the device. This meter emerges on the map selection screen, just below the map.
  • For the selection or dis-selection of any segments, you only have to click on it.
  • Click and drag a box around the map segments that you want to select. This way you can choose multiple segments at once. After selecting them, let go of the mouse click. To deselect them, hold the command key and keep on dragging.
  • For the case, when you want to deselect all selected maps, go to menu bar> Edit menu> Clear selection.
